This month for “Meet The Designer” we have Franchesca from U Furniture Limited. Below I asked her some questions regarding her business. Check our her website HERE and beautiful projects below.
1. Introduction about you and your business, how & why you set it up etc?
I’m Franchesca, and I am a bespoke furniture designer at U Furniture Ltd. We are a family run business, I am the daughter of Joe who owns U Furniture Ltd and we specialise in designing, manufacturing, spraying and installing all kinds of bespoke and built in furniture.Initially working with Joe was a pit-stop and I was trying to figure out what I wanted to do in life and now nearly 4 years later, I am absolutely loving what I do!
I have developed a passion for helping clients turn their dream furniture into a reality, furniture they will love to use, see every day and suits them in every possible way. I also love working with Joe, we have a great relationship and we make a very good team while running the business together so last year I decided to step things up.
Over the last year we have worked with home owners and interior designers, and have created some beautiful pieces of furniture. We have a very exciting 2018 still to come which we just cannot wait for.
2. Tell us about your style of furniture.
Our most common projects are those in period properties so it’s popular to mimic the features of the home into the furniture too, making it quite traditional with different mouldings and decorative features or creating a modern twist on a traditional design. But we also have worked on very contemporary pieces of furniture in new build homes where that style suits best. It all really depends on the house, the style of the room and how it’s designed also as well as the preference of the client. These elements tied in together will determine the design. This is where the term ‘bespoke’ really comes into play, you can get really creative and have a lot of fun with it.
3. Where do you get your inspiration from?
I get a lot of my inspiration from Instagram, Pinterest and other furniture designers. I do sometimes get carried away and a few hours have gone by and I’ve just been sat scrolling, pinning, saving. I love seeing what has already been done and evaluating it; what I like, possibly what I don’t like, how I may have done it differently. I’ve recently starting creating mood boards for my clients who are unsure on what style they want to go for, collating lots of different images together to get a real feel for what they like and don’t like, as that’s always essential to know.
4. What has been your best project to date
Our best project to date is a actually one we have done really recently. We designed and installed this absolutely beautiful pair of alcove wardrobes in Wanstead in East London. We manufactured the exterior of the wardrobes from MDF and sprayed it in Farrow and Ball’s Mole’s Breath in a 30% sheen level. The interior was manufactured from a birch ply and sprayed with a clear lacquer so the grain of the birch ply picked up beautifully and the edges of the birch ply create a great feature. It really took my breath away when I visited the clients house to take some visual content. *You can read more about the project here in our case studies post*
5. If you could give one bit of advice for someone wanting to set up their own business, what would it be?
My current motivational quote is, “you do you”. Believe in yourself and your business because a positive outlook will more than likely result in a positive outcome. Don’t be afraid what others might say, always remember why you started your business and keep your goals in sight. No one else is going to do it for you so get in gear and do it, take risks and go with your gut.
